5th Indonesia Talent Festival

22nd September 2013 was a faboulous Sunday for The Art Center. Three of our Vocal students joined the 5th Indonesia Talent Festival at Pluit Village Mall. It was a talent-scouting competition held by tisi Pratama Management, one of talent agency in Indonesia.

The singing competition started with audition round, followed by 15 singers. Three of our students made it to the Semifinal round. Now we are waiting for the results whether they will make it to the Final round. Well done our Star-to-be !!

This song is a beautiful exercise for Slur and Staccato exercise. Catherine did a very clear Staccato and Slur while playing this song.

 

 

Legato Phrasing 2

This video is showing another Legato Phrasing exercise performed by Jonathan from The Little Pianist Op. 189 (Kohler).

 

 

 

Legato Phrasing

One of the most important technique required to play a beautiful Sonatine is legato phrasing. A lot of legato exercises can be found in exercises composition by Czerny, Gurlitt and Kohler.

This video showing Madeline performing "Memory" (by Gurlitt). We can hear Alberti Bass (the characteristic of classical piano accompaniment), long Legato phrasing and slur in this E minor piece. Madeline managed a beautiful slur and phrasing

Finally after a long and tiring weeks preparing the A.S.L.I Concert, We are BACK!

Sight-Reading

When it comes to sight-reading session, it's always the most stressfull seconds in the cold and almost silent exam room. To be honest, there is no other way to get better at sight-reading than practicing. In this post, I would like to share some tips on how to improve your sight-reading. Think marathon rather than sprint.

1. Take in as much information as you can before you begin, including time signature, key signature, tempo markings, dynamic markings, phrasing, rhythm and fingering. Don't miss the clef.

2. Be aware of the range of notes within any given bars. Take a quick look over the lowest notes and the highest notes.

3. Keep going!!!!! DO NOT REPEAT, slow down the tricky part a little bit if you have to but do your best to avoid coming to a complete halt.

4. Focus on reading by the interval rather than worrying so much about the name of the notes.

5. Find your fingering. If a fingering is not mark, try to accomodate as many notes as you can in the SAME hand position to avoid any unecessary change of hand position.

6. Try to keep your eyes on the score at all times, imagining that your fingers as sticking to the keys, feeling their ways towards the next notes.

A.S.L.I Banner (II)

Haha...this is what all of us are waiting for. A super giant banner (9m length) and it took us more than one hour to put it up in front of our training center. Everybody looks so cool there.

Concert Prep (III)

Another cool composition by our student, Nathan Aldrich (9yrs old) who is going to perform on the A.S.L.I concert this 22nd June 2013. Nathan's composition is about cyclone of war. The video uploaded is just an excerpt of the scene where the canons are boomings. Come and watch Nathan playing live in the concert. You won't regret ^^

Stars of the A.S.L.I concert

As I mentioned previously all the stars in the A.S.L.I concert and clay art exhibition are below 15 years old, but now we have a new member joining us, Christy Jo, she is 16. A smart and confident young lady.

Mushroom Houses (II)

Mushroom House project is progressing well. More and more students are participating and creating their own unique mushroom houses. They are truly creative. All the kids are not more than 13 years old. The winner of the Most Favourite Mushroom House will be announced on  22nd June 2013 after the A.S.L.I music performances.

Colorful Birds (II)

Remember the previous colorful birds project we uploaded a few weeks ago? Today another upload of colorful bird drawing by Jonathan (8 yrs old). It's the blue Kingfisher. He joined us 3 months ago and had no confidence in drawing. He always say he can't draw a good shape, and that's not true. Look at this drawing. Will you agree that he can't draw??? The answer is definetely NO ^^ 
 

Gabriella Graziella

Gabriella (9yrs old) is one of the smartest student in IPEKA Pluit. She is chosen to be the representative of her school for the Science Olympiad in Jakarta. No matter how busy she is with her school work, Gabriella always find some time to practise her piano at home. She is now preparing for the ABRSM grade 2 exam in August 2013. Below is her video playing "Bear Dance" from one of the ABRSM grade 2 exam pieces.

 

 

Concert Announcement

This is our first A.S.L.I music concert presenting students' ASLI (which means original in English) Piano Compositions and also their skilfull voice performances. Clay art works by students and Drawing exhibitions will be at the same day,too. All the children are below 15 years old and have been working hard to bring out their best in music and art to the audiences.

 

There will be voting and award for the Best Composition, Best Voice Performance and Best Clay Art work. Please come and give your vote to your favourite Star to be ^^

Ecossaise

Ecossaise is a type of contra dance in scottish style and usually in 2/4 times with a lively rhythm. It has a significant dynamic contrast where pianissimo and fortissimo appear very close together.

In this video, Mathilda (9 yrs old) is performing Ecossaise in G by Beethoven. She managed to play it in a very lively style.

Enthutiasm in Practising

Ralph Waldo Emerson once said “Enthusiasm is the mother of effort, and without it nothing great was ever achieved.”

So, students come on up and start being enthutiast in practising (^o^)/

Concert Preparation (II)

After being absent for almost a month, Nathaniel Arifin (8yrs old) came back with his creative original composition. He managed to catch-up with his fellow pianist friends. Nathaniel's song is about a clumsy soldier who keeps making trouble within his troops. Today we upload only an extract of his composition.
